Used Books, anyone?

33-domesday-book-451x243.jpgIn my travels around the universe of blogs, there is one thing that is on all our minds, the economy. For writers and readers, the big question is buying books. All the authors I know are ferocious readers and many of my none writing friends are big readers too. With gas pushing in the direction of $5.00 a gallon, with no sign of slowing down, those of us who love to buy new books have been left with the question, “What is going to be sacrificed to fulfill our addiction?”The price of books will be going up. It is in the cards. Gas goes up and anything moved by a truck will go up with it. We’re already seeing it the price of groceries. It’s a matter of time before it hits the local book stores, if it hasn’t already.I’m retired, with a comfortable income. Still, it is all I will get for the rest of my life, until I sell a book. So I have to think about what I don’t need in order to fulfill my addiction for books.I’ve taken a good look at what I spend money on, and how I spend it. I’m not really an emotional buyer. I usually think carefully before I make a purchase. Do I need it or not? That’s the standard question, most of the time.Unfortunately, when it comes to books, I’m a straight-up, no-doubt-about-it emotional buyer. I’ll buy another book, even if the stack of books at my bedside is causing my small end table to lean precariously to the side, threatening to collapse under the weight of my TBR pile. The problem with the pile, it will take years for me to get through it at the rate I keep adding to it. Soon, I’ll have to make a path just to get to my bedside, and/or into my office. My husband has proclaimed that if there was ever a fire in our home, my office and our bedroom would go up like kindling. We’ll I’ve found a solution, used bookstores. I love them. I bring a punch of books I have managed to read, turn them in for credit, and get a punch more. These books are a bit used, with bent spines, but hey, my pile hasn’t been reduced a bit, much to hubby’s great disappointment.  Going to a used bookstore is fun. I find all my favorite authors, not always their latest releases, but often ones I haven’t read, or hope aren’t buried under the TBR pile. I find it doesnt’ take long and the new releases show up in the form of used. Because the books are used, I let go of them much more easily. No emotional attachment in form of a piece of my income, that amounts to a ¼ of a tank of gas, or lease. So they go back to ye ole used bookstore, for more used books.Question of the Day: What are you doing to keep up the book addiction in these times of economic stress?

I found that I was really wasting a lot of coffee. I usually make a full pot everyday and drink it throughout the day, but I found that usually the cups were getting cold before I could drink them. Then I would pour them out and get a fresh one, and the same thing would happen.

So I figured I must not really want it. So I switched to water and orange juice. Really, it’s been pretty easy.

I’ve been meaning to check out a used book store that’s in the shopping suburb that I go to. It’s about 25 miles away, but if I’m going that direction anyway, it shouldn’t be a big deal on the gas.

I’ve done the same with coffee. I still drink it, but am making smaller pots, because of the waste. Little things like that add up. And check out the used book store you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I find I’m not trying as many unknown authors, which is sad because I’ll start out as an unknown and I’ll want others to read my books. I’m going to have to be a little pickier and not grab every book I want on the shelves. Greed is bad, anyway.

I bought a single cup brew coffee machine and love it. It will brew just what I drink.

As to books, I don’t think I can ever give them up, much as I try to pare down. =) I try to be selective, but if something strikes my fancy, I get it. It’s my biggest vice. Now if I only had time to read them all!

I’ve rediscovered the library! I order books from other branches that I want to read, and they ship them to my local branch. That’s cut my book budget down quite a bit. I also do the used bookstore thing quite a bit.

Like Misa, I bought a single brew Black and Decker coffee machine. It’s amazing. The coffee even seems to stay hotter longer when I brew a cup with it.

  • Tiger Woods at time can be controversial, but when the sunsets, after a long golf tournament, his heart belongs to the TIGER WOODS Foundation. Where several after- school programs, such as golf clinics and college scholarships were created for young people. The purpose of the foundation is to give children who normally may not have the opportunity to follow their dreams. They have the opportunity to do so, in this unique program that encourages everything from golf to aero space studies. The concept of the Tiger Woods Learning Center came directly from Tiger. He isn’t just lending his name to the center but is active with its development. As Tiger has said, he had many opportunities to fulfill his dream of becoming a great golfer, now he is passing on the same to children who may not have the support he experienced. He is giving them the chance to see that there is a whole big world outside their lives. He is encouraging them to take the tiger by the tail and go for it. Tiger Woods is our Profiled Hero, because he puts his money where his mouth is.
