  • July is the month of our Nations birth. So it is fitting for Chasing Heroes, to salute and honor the men, who made it all happen, the citizen soldier. When the Revolutionary War started, it was a very arrogant move on the part of the colonies to take on the British, a well established and powerful nation. The colonies had no army. The British had one that seemed endless as it was also well manned and equipped. Us, we had literally nothing. So who should step up to the plate? The frontiersmen. Who left behind their families to take care of themselves, in most cases in very hostile conditions, so they could fight for our freedom. Most of them were largely uneducated, often were indentured servants still trying to pay off passages to the colonies, and freed slaves. These were the men who made our country happen, fighting with only what they personally owned, and in most cases never even holding out the hope of getting paid for their sacrifice. At home the women, tilled the fields, harvested, and fed their families alone in a country wild with animals, and Native Americans who didn’t welcome them. Still the men, fought and the women, held down the home front, so they could. Today the citizen soldier are the men and women of our country who once more leave behind families and jobs to serve us in Iraq and Afghanistan. So appropriately in the month of July, we salute and honor our Militia and their families for the ultimate sacrifice they make for us.
