Hero Mystique
I have romantic notions of places. It stems from visiting those places when I was a kid, and from having family there. I think it’s a ‘grass is always greener’ kind of thing. There has always been a mystique for me about Texas and Washington. If I move away from California, it will be to one of those two places.
I also have romantic notions about people, particularly characters from books. A friend of mine recently rented Gone with the Wind. She’s never seen it, nor has she read the book. Talking about Gone with the Wind with some other girl friends, I was surprised to find that several of them hadn’t read the book either.
A Classic Romance
How could this be?! Gone with the Wind is a classic. It should be on everyone’s bookshelf and in everyone’s Netflix queue. But I quickly checked myself and thought, Why? Just because I’ve seen it and loved it since I was a girl doesn’t mean that other people will feel the same way and/or have the same experiences.
I went on to wonder why I feel so strongly about Rhett Butler and Scarlet O’Hara and their romance. What I realized is that my romantic notions about this story stem from the fact that my mother and her friend, MaryAnn, took me and MaryAnn’s daughter, Lisa, to see Gone with the Wind in a theater when we were in elementary school. We dressed up and went out to lunch and saw the movie in a wide screen release. (At least I think we dressed up and went to lunch, but that could be part of my romanticized memory of the day.) No matter how it actually played out, it was a fabulous mother-daughter day.
I devoured the book during high school, reading during my breaks when I was working at a local corner market. And I saw the movie several times after the advent of video.
Fast-forward to 1989. Fifty years after Gone with the Wind was released as a film-one of the first, or maybe the first, colorized-the Crest Theater, an old, historical theater in Sacramento, California, held a fiftieth anniversary event. They showed the movie, invited people to dress up in costume , and held a reception. I’d been dating my boyfriend for a year and a half and we went to that showing of Gone with the Wind. He might remember it differently (read: coercion), but I remember it as a wonderfully special night we spent watching this classic romance unfold on the big screen. I married him, so see, whatever he expected from that night, he struck gold!
The Crest Theater
What does this have to do with heroes? Just like Texas and Washington hold state mystique for me, and just like Gone with the Wind holds romantic mystique for me, Rhett Butler, the character, holds hero mystique for me. Obviously it’s because I connect him with the Gone with the Wind moments in my life, but whatever the reason, I love Rhett. He is the quintessential rogue and a charmer, but he loved Scarlet until she pushed him too far. He was honorable, and my heart broke for him. There’s something about him that I will always love.

Gone with the Wind’s happy ending is for the reader to supply (at least it was until the sequel was authorized, but that’s another column for another day), and despite Scarlet and Rhett’s faults, I always rooted for them. What about you…are you a fan of Gone with the Wind?

What an excellent blog! I love Gone With the Wind, both the book and the movie. I still shake my head in disbelief over Scarlett preferring Ashley over Rhett and then discovering her mistake once it was too late to make amends.
For me, Ranger from Janet Evanovich’s Plum series holds the Hero Mystique. He shows up when she needs him, he makes her reach out of her comfort zone. He always supports Stephanie and he’s proud of her efforts to help people, no matter how unorthodox her methods. He may not be ready for marriage or settling down but then, neither is Stephanie and they make an excellent team.
Like Scarlett, Stephanie isn’t blind to Ranger’s charm but for some reason -possibly the shared history that’s basically been romanticized in her mind- she hangs on to Joe Morelli, a man who appears intent on dragging down her self-esteem. He’s not a boyfriend, he’s an abuser - the total opposite of a hero.

Hi Misa–Great blog. My ears went red while reading this and I thought, I’m so bad! I know I have to read this. My friend Jean has been encouraging me as well. What’s holding me back? Preconceptions, I suppose. 1) I don’t think the actor who played Rhett Butler is attractive (I don’t find Robert Redford attractive either (gasp)–I’m twisted, I guess); 2) “Scarlett preferring Ashley over Rhett and then discovering her mistake once it was too late to make amends”; and 3) “happy ending is for the reader to supply.” Bottom line, for me, the heroic mystique is that if a man truly loves a woman, it’s never going to be too late for them, and if it is, it’s not because the hero gives up or says he just doesn’t give a damn. To fall so deeply in love with a woman, she has to be worthy enough for the battle of a lifetime. All this said, I WILL read it someday, just because I know you’ve got great taste.

Gone with the Wind was always one of my favorite books and movies. I’m proud to say I own both. I so much wanted to have Scarlett’s strength and sass, with a man like Rhett chasing me. but in real life, those things don’t go down like that, which is why we like to read about it. My favorite hero has always been 007, James Bond, but has to be either Sean Connery, or Daniel Craig in the role. As cool and swave as the character is, there is still something hidden in his heart, which brings out the mystique hero. It’s the “it takes the right woman to bring out, thing.” I was fairly young when James Bond hit the big screen, and my mom wouldn’t let me see the movie. “It’s not for young ladies,” she said rather sternly. So my brother snuck me into the theater to watch. For me nothing has been the same in the hero department.

That’s so funny, W! I’ve always liked Joe, but I totally see your point! Ranger IS always there for her and shows up just when she needs him. I think what bugs me now about the series is that Stephanie isn’t able to make a decision between the two. Scarlett does make a choice, it’s just too late. She has hero mystique about Ashley, but finally sees the truth, whereas Stephanie can’t get past her hero mystique for Joe. Great point!

All right, I’ll read it one of these days. What was the name of that restaurant we ate at with Eileen in Atlanta? Wasn’t Aunt so-and-so’s something or other? Had to do with Gone With the Wind, I remember, because I was beat over the head several times by you guys for not having read it (yet).

I love Gone with the Wind, not only for Rhett sweeping Scarlett off her feet but for the sweeping saga of the movie to go with it. Rhett is larger than life and so is the story.
I have hero mystique for John McClain in the Die Hard movies. It is unrealistic to think one man stops a whole slew of terrorists, but I love the thought that he would try or die trying.

Great Blog Misa! I have always loved GWTW too! My parents took me when I was in grade school, and I read the book in High School, though I have to admit to skimming over the political blah blah sometimes to get to the good parts. (Susan I hear your exclamation of horror from 500 miles away.)
Speaking of classics (big fat ones) with bad girl heroines who overlook the one guy who really loves them, Have you read “Forever Amber”? Truly a great historical romance, if only Amber would just get a clue…
