The Move
We are settling in Texas after a grueling 4 day drive. The transition has made me think about things I have to have [those pesky necessities in life], things I want [that are attainable], and things that are on my “dream a little dream” list. Necessities:
- the internet [I’m at Starbucks –almost 7 miles away and the only one within 20 miles that has wi-fi]. I miss it and I put this in the necessities category since I use it daily for my livelihood.
- refigeration. Our refrigerator broke on day one in the new house [a built-in that we can’t afford to fix]. We are still without but the new, affordable fridge is supposed to arrive today.
- a dryer. We have a gas dryer and the new house is electric. Argh!!!!
- friends. I miss my Cali-girls more than I can say. Shouting out to Paigey, Virna, Christy, Gloria, Kim, Katie, et al.
Wants:
- a Mini Cooper. My uncle just bought one and took us for a spin and it’s SO fun! I think it will inspire me. I think my next heroine will drive one.
- to be out of boxes. Soon, very soon.
- friends for my kids. Soon, very soon.4. to visit [or be visited by] my friends.
Dreaming a Little Dream:
- the Mini Cooper probably fits here unless I get writing and sell a new book, or ten. =)
- all my friends moving to North Texas. It’s not an unreasonable request, is it?
- I won’t get on my soapbox aside from saying: a cure for diabetes and celiac disease, two things our family lives with.
The process of moving has been strenuous to say the least. If I never see another box, I’ll be happy! But we’re here and settling and starting our newest adventure. I’d love to hear about some of yours.
Question of the Day: Have you moved [inter or intrastate]? What’s the worst part about moving? The best?

I am a moving queen. I have moved cross country (like from the southeast to California or Texas) four times. All together I’ve moved about 12 times, but many of those were in state or to the next state over. My job used to have me do that a lot, and then when I was younger I was a real wanderer.
The worst thing was being without my stuff, and then having a lot of it broken when it got there, or being told that I owe another $300 in charges when the movers finally did arrive and see the stairs that I KNOW I told them about on the front end.
The best part? Setting up house! I love doing that.
I know just what you mean about the boxes, though. It seems like you’ll never be able to get rid of them all. I’ve moved so many times and had so many boxes that whenever I bring a storage box home now, my pets look at me like, “Oh no…not again. We LIKE it here, Mom!”

I moved as a child from Minnesota to Cali, which was tramatic. I left behind my older syblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. My great-grandmother and grandmother had just passed away within months of each other. Both of which I was very close. I moved to an area, where for the first time in my life, I wasn’t related to the town and didn’t know a soul, besides the younger syblings who did make the move. I was 10 yrs old, and since than, every move I’ve made has been compared to this singular moment in my life. Even the weather was a mystery to me, I went from the boundry waters of the Canadian border, to the long dry hot summers of Northern California. I had a very thick Minnesota accent, that I was teased about, until it faded with time. When I still hear that accent in my speech occasionally, I now smile at the pride I take in it, and how unique I was for the small town that eventually I called home.

12 times. LC! Wow. I think we’re at 8 or so, but this is 6 with kids and that sure does add a whole ‘nother element! I agree, setting up house and decorating IS the best part. =)

I had no idea that you were from Minnesota, Lee! You never thought of going back?

When I was much younger, we moved from NC to PA then to VA and then to KY. I enjoyed all of it but I didn’t have children then. We built our house in ‘73 and moved from an apartment. Only moved a little at a time so I could put everything where it went before moving more. That was so easy as everything was new in the house so I only had a small amount to move. I hope you get everything sorted out soon so you can start enjoying your new life. Take care everyone and hugs.
